I use images printed from a laser printer. Mine happens to be an HP, so I'm not sure if the "recipes" for toner are the same for other laser printer manufacturers and would work the same way.The transfers to PZCut and Speedy Stamp come out crisp and clear with no smudging, even after prolonged handling.
I did attempt a transfer on Speedy Stamp from an inkjet print using a hot iron and even with another piece of paper covering the graphic, I ended up with a sticky mess when the image decided to melt into the medium.
I have used the acetone method as well and, if the medium is allowed to dry thoroughly, the result is acceptable, though has a tendency to smudge after a while if the piece requires alot of handling.
If anyone has any questions about the laser printer transfer method, please feel free to ask.

Low heat for a bit longer seems to work better than high heat for shorter
time (doesn't melt the rubber or give it a 'hard' surface)
If you take your image (or images) to Kinko's or use a 'professional'
copier, the transfer works better. I think it's because those machines use a
heat transfer process and most home printers don't use that kind of ink.
I like that it gives you as crisp an image as you see on the paper (hard to
get with carbon paper tracing). I've also seen people recommend acetone, but
I haven't tried it myself.

The part about the hot iron is certainly something I haven't tried.
Are you talking about printing onto plain paper, or something else?
